The Ultimate Paint Calculator: How Much Paint Do You Really Need?

Have you ever found yourself wondering, How much paint do I need? Or Can I save money by buying extra paint now to use later? These are common questions in the painting industry, and many homeowners have no idea where to begin in order to answer them. That’s why we put together this comprehensive guide on how to calculate how much paint you need so that you can complete your next project with ease.

Why This Is the Best Paint Calculator for Your Project

This paint calculator is the best because you can use it for any project and it will tell you exactly how much paint you need. With just a few simple clicks, you’ll know exactly how much material to buy before heading out to the store. This app also calculates how many gallons of primer, latex paint or acrylic paint are needed in addition to colorant and additives like hardener or retarder. The app also lets you customize things like whether you’re painting ceilings or walls, as well as if your walls have windows or not. It even gives an estimate on how long the entire process will take so that you know if your DIY weekend project is worth it!

Before You Begin, Think About These Things

*What kind of paint are you using, and what color? *Are you painting the whole house, or just one room? *How much is your budget for paint– can you afford to buy more than one gallon at a time, or do you need to keep it within a certain price range per gallon? *How many gallons will be enough to cover the surface area of your home’s walls (in square feet)?

After you’ve calculated your paint amount, here’s how to figure out how much money you’ll save.

So now you know how much paint you need, but how much money will it save you? Here’s the breakdown.

* 1 gallon of paint covers 400 square feet. So if you’re painting an 800 sq ft room in a single color, then 4 gallons should do the trick. If you’re doing two colors or a pattern, then 5-6 gallons would be needed. The average price for one gallon is about $30-$50 and there are 32 ounces in one gallon. To get your total cost, multiply $30 by 4 (the amount per gallon), and divide that number by 40 (number of ounces per gallon). The result is $2 per square foot. For instance, an 800 sq ft room with all the different hues required to create a multi-color look will cost about $1,600 ($30 x 8).

Keep these tips in mind when ordering your next batch of paint.

-Measure the length and width of the area you are painting. -Find out the square footage of your walls. -Find out what level of coverage you want (light, medium, heavy). If you are not sure, heavy is usually a safe bet. This will tell you how much paint to order.
