The Dos and Don’ts of Painting Your Metal Front Door

Your front door is one of the first things that people see when they come to visit your home, which makes it essential that you take extra care to paint it in the best way possible. If you’re not sure how to get started, here are some dos and don’ts that can help you achieve the beautiful look you desire!

Before you begin

If you’re looking for a way to change the look of your front door, painting it is one of the cheapest and easiest ways. If you’re considering painting your metal door, there are some things to keep in mind before beginning. Here are some dos and don’ts to help make the process easier.

Step 1: Prep your door with primer

Sand the door with a fine-grit sandpaper to remove any rust or paint. Then, apply primer in a light coat. This will create a sealant that will protect the metal from any future damage. Allow the primer to dry for about an hour before continuing on to the next step.

Step 2: Choose your paint color

Choosing the right color for your metal door is essential, but there are some things you should consider before committing to a color. There are many factors that can affect the paint job, such as temperature, humidity, and even the angle from which you view it. But don’t worry! We have all these things covered for you with our helpful tips below.

Step 3: Decide on your finish

When you’re ready to paint your metal front door, it’s important to choose a color that compliments the color of your house. The best way to do this is by using a bucket and brush to create samples on the door itself. Just fill up a bucket with water, add some white paint, and dip in your brush. Put one dot on the bottom half of the door. Put one dot on the top half of the door.

Step 4: Start painting

Allow the first coat to dry for about an hour, then apply a second coat. If you plan on painting over it later, make sure to let it dry for at least 24 hours before doing so.

Step 5: Seal your paint job to prevent rusting

Once the paint is dry, it’s time to seal the paint job to prevent rusting. This is a critical step that many people skip, but using an oil-based or acrylic sealer will keep your paint looking new for years to come. Apply the sealer with a roller or brush, and then use a clean rag to wipe off any excess. The last thing you want is a mess in your entryway!

Afterward, maintaining and caring for your painted door

It is important to maintain your door by cleaning it with soap and water, then coat it with an exterior sealant. If the surface becomes discolored over time, sand it down and paint it again.
