Kitchen Island Space and Sizing Guide: How Much Space Do You Really Need?

When you start to plan your kitchen design and remodeling project, one of the first decisions you have to make is whether or not to include an island. An island can add extra storage and workspace, but it will also take up space in your kitchen and may even cut into your seating area. Kitchen islands can be big or small, and they can offer a lot of different functions. So how much space do you really need? Keep reading this kitchen island space and sizing guide to get some helpful tips on choosing the right size for your kitchen!

The right space for your kitchen island

The first thing to consider when looking for a kitchen island is how much space you will need. Remember that the space required for your kitchen island will vary greatly depending on the size of your kitchen, the number of people you cook for, what kind of cooking method you use, and how often you cook. For example, if you are cooking every day and have a large family, then chances are you need a larger island. A small family or one who doesn’t cook very often may not need as big an island. If you only do simple tasks like chopping vegetables, then you probably don’t need as much space as someone who does deep frying or grilling. However, even if you don’t do a lot of deep frying or grilling, it is important to include some storage on the side of your kitchen island because it will be so close to your stovetop and could pose a fire hazard.

The right shape

The shape of your island will depend on the space you have in your kitchen. For example, if you have a square kitchen, then a square or rectangular island is perfect. But if you have an L-shaped kitchen, consider adding two islands – one on each side of the kitchen – so that they’re not completely across from each other.

The right size

A kitchen island is a wonderful addition to your home, but it can take up a lot of space. Make sure that you have the right amount of space for your kitchen island before you buy one.

-Measure out the size of your room, including the area around it. This will be the size of your island’s footprint.

-Make sure to measure in front, behind, and on both sides as well as up towards the ceiling if you plan on having cabinets above it.
