Get Ready for Winter: How to Winterize an Above-Ground Pool

For most people, the end of the summer means that it’s time to close up their swimming pools and wait until next year to use them again. But closing your pool before winter hits doesn’t mean that you have to leave your pool in its current state forever. With some preparation during the early fall and late spring, you can ensure that your above-ground pool will be ready to go when you are next year, with minimal effort on your part. Learn how to winterize an above-ground pool in this helpful guide!

Start By Cleaning Out Leaves and Debris

The best way to start winterizing your pool is by cleaning it out. Start by removing all leaves and debris from the surface of the water with a pool net or vacuum.

Set the Proper Chemical Levels

The first step in preparing your pool for winter is to set the proper chemical levels. If you have a salt water pool, you’ll need to set the chlorine level at 1-3 ppm and the pH level between 7.2 and 7.8. For fresh water pools, keep the chlorine level around 3-5 ppm with a pH range of 7.2 -7.6. Once you’ve reached these levels, it’s time to start draining the pool!

Make Sure You Drain The Water

The first step in preparing your pool is to drain the water. You can do this by running a hose from the faucet at one end of the pool and then turning on that side’s pump. When the water level reaches halfway up the skimmer, you’ll know it’s time to turn off the spigot and let it all drain out. When it stops, disconnect the hose from the spigot.

Protect Your Pool From Animals

To protect your pool from animals during the winter, be sure to keep leaves and other debris away from the pool. You can do this by using a leaf net or covering the pool with a tarp. Do not allow snow or ice to accumulate on the cover. If you are unsure how to properly winterize your pool, consult with a professional before freezing temperatures arrive.

Use a Thermometer

To make sure your pool is safe and ready for the winter, there are a few steps you need to take.

Don’t Add New Water Until Spring

When it comes time to winterize your pool, one of the best things you can do is don’t add any new water.

Keep the Cover On at All Times

One thing you can do is make sure that the pool cover is on at all times. This will save you money in the long run, as it will keep your pool clean and free of debris, bugs and leaves.
